We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Coach John Swinburne, a founding member of the West Michigan All-Star Track & Field Meet Steering Committee and a legendary coach and mentor in the Muskegon area. Coach Swinburne passed away on April 18, following a long illness that began with the discovery of a tumor in 2002.
Over the course of more than five decades, John left an extraordinary legacy. At Oakridge High School, he led his teams to numerous championships—guiding them to every West Michigan Conference track title from 1971 to 1985, with just one exception. His leadership extended well beyond the scoreboard. Former athletes, educators, and colleagues describe him as a coach who built strong, faith-driven relationships and inspired personal growth in every student he mentored.
Even as he battled health challenges, Coach Swinburne remained actively involved in coaching until the 2023 season. His commitment never wavered, and his influence can still be felt in the lives of those he coached and in the strength of the community he helped build.
John’s contributions have been formally recognized through a local award named in his honor, and discussions are underway regarding his induction into the Muskegon Area Sports Hall of Fame. His life will be celebrated on April 26, as friends, family, and former athletes gather to remember the incredible legacy he leaves behind.
We are honored to have had Coach Swinburne as part of the All-Star Meet's foundation. His passion, integrity, and dedication helped shape this event and the broader community it serves.
